Fight Off Illness Naturally

As the cold weather sets in, so does cold and flu season. Although there is no sure-fire way to prevent illnesses like colds and flus, there are several natural remedies or methods that can help lessen the severity and duration of these illnesses. Protect yourself and your loved ones by taking these steps.

One of the best ways to fight cold and flu viruses is to boost your immune system. This can be done by eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly. You can also try supplements like vitamin C, echinacea, and eating natural, immunity-boosting foods such as garlic, broccoli, yogurt and almonds.

Another helpful remedy is to drink plenty of fluids. This will help to thin out mucus and keep your throat hydrated. Drink warm liquids like tea or soup, and avoid sugary drinks like soda or juice, which can promote dehydration. A calming camomile, refreshing peppermint or herbal ginger and lemon tea can be a warming way to get a higher liquid intake during cool months. Always remember that drinking water is the best way to hydrate!

If you do come down with a cold or the flu, there are several home remedies that can help relieve symptoms. For example, drinking honey and lemon tea can help soothe a sore throat, while inhaling steam from a bowl of hot water can clear congestion, especially with a few drops of lavender or eucalyptus oil. When it comes to colds, one of the most commonly-used home remedies is the Neti Pot, which helps to flush out nasal passages with saline water. This helps relieve the sinuses and helps with breathing through the nose.

Although cold and flu season is never fun, hopefully these natural remedies will help you get through it a little bit easier. Stay healthy!
